The Noisemaker

about

Probably my most ambitious song yet. It describes the landing of Charles Lindbergh at Le Bourget Airport in 1927, after his successful Atlantic crossing. I’ve thought for some time that this is a pretty good metaphor for the arrival of progress and modern times in our civilization. The quiet world gets swallowed up by the noise, the machines and the factories. My theory is that some people who were cheering that day were also a bit worried that Earth, as they knew it, would never be the same again. How right they were! The song travels along this path; a quiet beginning, and then the slow arrival, like humming bees, of diverse machinery. In the end, the music gets slowly eaten up by the shrieks of our modern times.

lyrics

The Noisemaker (Le Bourget, May 21st, 1927)

We’ve got no flowers for you, Mr. Lindbergh
There’ll be no bouquet for you in Paris
We have a deep respect for the ocean
We won’t cross it, to any degree

Please leave
Please go

We’ll have none of that in the old world
The noise you make fills us with glee
You’re not welcome here at « Le Bourget »
We’ll keep our own « Saint Louis »

Please leave
Please go

You’re so full of it ! Pizzazz and theories
You want to break the wall of sound
But consider ; even Galileo
Couldn’t make the world go ‘round

Please go
Please leave
