about

My good friend Fred Merk has played guitar on the last two Hemlock Smith albums and he also (and wonderfully so) produced the first of these two ("By the Grace of Dynamite", 2016). His way with sound is exceptional. Fred left us to pursue his personal project 17f and released this song recently, in a limited way, to see where this new path would lead him. I had the chance to sing on it and, as I think it's a great tune, it pained me to notice that very few people had heard it. The fact that it also contains electronic percussion and synths was the cherry on the cake and I asked Fred if he would allow me to re-publish it. I'm glad he accepted. The words tell a tale of people being scared of everything, wild animals and invisible enemies. They buy guns, they build walls. I wrote the first version of this poem back in the nineties but it all seems so real now. Paranoia is a way of life, nowadays.

Please listen to the incredible work Fred Merk does on his own:

lyrics

Spiders are Here

My father was a prisoner of the moonbeam
Never would he venture, sorta, upstream
The TV anchor said: “They’re all a different colour, they
Let the lightning strike and the thunder holler!”

In the jungle
In the jungle…

My mother was a prisoner of the treadmill
Never would she venture, kinda, downhill
Everybody claims they really saw the gold
She’d rather have her dreams for the dust to hold

It’s a jungle
Oh! It’s a jungle…out there…

CH
A foot in the jungle
A lifetime of fear
A man in the trap – get ready
The Spiders are here!
The Spiders are here!

My brother was a prisoner of the cave bear
Never would he venture, you know – outta there
Everybody claims they really got it all
If we had something missing, we’d make a call -
Build a wall -
If we had something wanting, we’d order from the mall

‘Cos it’s a jungle, out there
‘Cos it’s a nightmare…

CH
A foot in the jungle
A lifetime of fear
A man in the trap – get ready
The Spiders are here!

The Spiders are here!
The Spiders are here!
The Spiders are here!
